Navigating Team Development: Insights from Tuckman and Satir

Ignatius Tirta
Head of Learning at Product Narrative
He helps organizations—from startups to established companies—align and execute their goals through the OKR framework, craft purpose-driven narratives to unite and mobilize individuals.. Recently, he has been leading the Lecture Series initiative to sustain organizational health at one of Indonesia’s leading e-commerce companies.
He is committed to understanding human dynamics and complexity, which led him to the fields of organizational development—examining human interactions within organizations—and Satir Therapy, which explores human dynamics in families. For the latter, he has completed 100+ hours of training in Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy (Level 1), inspiring him to integrate its principles into organizations and offer leaders a human-centered approach to leadership and team development.
How can concepts and insights from family therapy serve as a complementary approach to understanding team development?
This workshop explores the developmental process teams go through to become high-performing through collective and individual perspective.
From the collective perspective, we’ll analyze the team as a whole—discussing team needs, common pitfalls, and strategies for leaders to navigate each stage effectively. The goal is to help teams understand what it takes to achieve both high productivity and strong collaboration.
To do this, we’ll use Tuckman’s Stages of Team Development—a widely recognized model utilized by MIT—to break down each stage and explore it in detail.
Complementing this is the individual perspective, which focuses on how team leaders can support and care for individual team members throughout each stage—especially during challenging transitions.
Here, we’ll introduce the Satir Change Model, originally developed in the context of Satir Therapy, a family therapy approach centered on personal and relational transformation. This model will serve as a framework for leaders to guide their teams through change with empathy and awareness..
By integrating these two models, this workshop provides a holistic approach to leadership—balancing team performance with team well-being.
What we’ll cover on the day

The four (4) stages of team development and key characteristics and challenges at each stage.
